To BYOD, or really how to BYOD, that is the question...

To BYOD, or really how to BYOD, that is the question...

BYOD refers to Bring Your Own Device. BYOD programs are growing across the nation and Rockland Public Schools has been contemplating how to start one. There are many questions to consider before implementing a BYOD program including:

  • What curricular objectives are supported and/or enhanced by BYOD?
  • What are the classroom management considerations?
  • How will we educate students and families on digital citizenship and acceptable use?
  • How many students could and would participate in a BYOD program?
  • What school devices are available to supplement BYOD?
  • Is the school infrastructure (wifi, charging stations, etc.) ready?

What are your thoughts and feedback on this important issue?

  2. From a Technology Coordinator and technology department perspective the ability to facilitate our technology resources with those that can be supplied by families makes tech saturation a viable possibility. And we're well on our way to getting there.

  3. I love the idea of BYOD. but I understand why we must proceed with caution. Still, the classroom, learning, and engagement opportunities are immense. How are other districts handling this issue? Could we create a contract for students and parents? What kind of classroom management training is available for teachers to deal with students with their own devices? What about a few classes in different grades piloting BYOD, then a discussion about these issues? This will be fabulous when we can reach a comfort level with the technology.

  4. Do not forget about security, hacking, and theft of these devices. We will need a clear plan and perhaps language in the handbook.

  5. I would rather not be concerned with how other districts are implementing BYOD but rather initiate it through a Rockland perspective. I believe that classroom management is strictly up to the teacher and his or her style and control. Granted there can be mutliple distractions with technology but having control over the class with clear guidelines and consequences that are followed up on should go a long way to keeping students on task. There should be no "can of worms" between a personal device or a school owned device. In school, on task, period.
Security of personal devices needs to be reinforced at home by the parent/guardian. It should not be the teachers or administrations job to guarantee a personal device's security other than normal due diligence. ie: Keeping items out of clear view, locking them up, locking the door...
I welcome the opportunity to start a BYOD program here in Rockland and believe we have the staff and administration capable of doing it.

I love that for all aspects of school.
We will be surveying RMS kids in the very near future to get their perspective.

  7. Great news, the town of Rockland & Capitol Improvements has approved the wireless and iPad initiative, that was proposed for all elementary schools. What does this mean? It means that all elementary schools will be receiving a campus wide wireless solution, eliminating the need for individual AP's(access points) and giving users a more reliable wireless connection. Just as important to the growth of Rockland's student population is the approval of the initiative to provide each elementary school teacher with an iPad for collaborative work and projects. Lisa Ryan is already developing a summer professional development session, similar to the MassCUE format, that will be directly related to iPads and their use and function in the classrooms. Everyone will want to be involved in that and your idea's and suggestions are desired. Great job Town Of Rockland and their educators.

  9. Lisa is also offering an iPad Basics session towards the end of June. If you have any questions regarding the use of an iPad or if you would like the chance to enhance your skills this would be a great opportunity to do just that.
