Introducing the New RPS Tech Blog...

Welcome to the new Rockland Public Schools Technology Blog...

We are going to use this space to discuss district technology initiatives and ideas as a supplement to our monthly technology committee meetings. With everyone's busy schedules, it is difficult to attend those meetings so this will be an opportunity for everyone's voice to be heard.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 2:50 pm at Rogers Middle School in the lecture hall located near the library. Discussion topics will include the following:

  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device to school)
  • technology training ideas
  • update on technology and distribution

Any other topics brought up in this forum will be added to the agenda.

This forum is for the introduction and discussion of new ideas and initiatives. Any trouble tickets or computer problems should still be sent to Tim Wells (twells@rocklandschools.org) and (Kris Howe) khowe@rocklandschools.org.

  2. I think it's a good idea, as well. Also, I have put the May 1 meeting on my calendar. I hope to be able to make it.

  5. The technology department sent a request into the superintendents office for a two part initiative designed for the elementary schools. Part 1 is to institue a Wi-Fi solution for each of the elementary school campuses and part 2 is to provide each teacher with an iPad.
As Lisa Ryan has demonstrated the iPad is an excellent device for creating certain projects with its all in one capabilities. For further information on integrating this technology into your classrooms get in touch with Lisa at lryan@rocklandschools.org. This will also allow us, as a district, to get this technology into the hands of the students at a much younger age than we can currently.
The technology department will keep you informed as to the progress of this initiative.

  6. Thank you for this initiative! The iPad is an invaluable piece of technology that should be more available to elementary students. It provides so many educational opportunities. :-)

  7. I agree Ruth Ann. Regarding professional development, I am wondering what areas teachers are interested in for training. Here are just a few I am thinking about so far:

    * interface & general use overview (gestures, downloading apps, organization, saving images, etc.)
    * professional tool (Google, Twitter, assessment tools, etc.)
    * curriculum specific apps (sharing of curriculum area and grade level apps)
    * presentation tool (Keynote, Haiku Deck, etc.)
    * creativity tool (overlaps with presentation but apps like iMovie, Educreation, etc.)

What other ideas does everyone have???

  8. Having an iPad in each Elementary classroom would be great for creating technology projects on our own. As of now, when we come up with an idea ,Lisa needs to come down to help because we do not have the equipment to execute them.
